The Three Types Of Charging Ev Vehicles
There are 3 levels of chargers for Electric vehicles.
-
Level 1:
220 volt AC 3 pin plug, known as Trickle Charging. This is the slowest method of charging your vehicle.
-
Level 2:
A Specially installed AC EV Charge point. This type is widely installed around the uk.
-
Level 3:
A Fast / UltraFast Charging DC Charge point. Usually found in fuel stations and commercial installs. The fastest to charge at an average of 12 miles charge per minute.
Active Electrics can install both Level 2 & Level 3 chargers, where appropriate. DC fast charging requires 440v so cannot be installed at a residential property;
7KW or 3KW - Choosing Power Type (level 2)
Choosing the type of charger you need usually depends on 3 factors: your budget, your car & future plans.
Your car will have a maximum charge wattage rating. This is the maximum amount of power your car can draw in whilst charging. The most common EV chargepoint ratings are 7 Kilowatts & 3 Kilowatts.
If your vehicle is only capable of drawing 3kw then installing a more expensive 7kw charger would only be suitable if you plan on upgrading your vehicle in the near future;
The difference between a 3kw & 7kw Ev charger is roughly about 6 hours. Most 3kwh vehicles will take close to 13 hours to reach a full charge & 7kwh taking about half of that at 6 hours.
Choosing A Brand of Charger
Choosing which brand of EV charger to insall also depends on your electric vehicle & budget. Naturally the lower priced EV chargers and brands are usually 3kw chargers meaning they take longer to charge your vehicle. Some EVs require certain models or brands of chargers to be installed to keep the car under warranty, please check your manual for any hidden T&Cs.

Is It Really Worth It?
Is it really worth the hassle and cost of installing a personal EV Charge point on your driveway? well, YES, We believe it is definitely a cost effective device to install at your home.
Many energy suppliers are offering special EV charging tarrifs that could mean your electric vehicle is charged for as little as 5 pence per kilowatt hour.
